What is Diabetes Diet Day?...

An interactive in-person workshop to improve diet, weight and health to either improve Diabetes or prevent it.

Join Dietitian and Diabetes Specialist Sinead McKay RD for a day of interactive learning and take steps towards improving your nutrition and preventing conditions like diabetes.

This course is for you or your loved one if you / they:

  • Are overweight

  • Don't know how to eat a balanced diet

  • Have diabetes

  • Have "pre-diabetes"

  • Are at risk of developing diabetes

  • Want to improve your health or achieve a healthier weight

This is an opportunity to attend 4 hours of education with HCPC registered Diabetes Specialist Dietitian Sinead McKay.

With 20 years experience as a Dietitian, Sinead has spent 16 years practicing as a Diabetes specialist in public healthcare, and with extensive experience delivering group education for healthy eating and diabetes.

This is a new program on nutrition aimed at giving the people of Liverpool fast and easy access to self-management education at an affordable price. Achieving good health does not need to be expensive or out of reach for anyone.

There are 3 potential stages to Diabetes Diet Day program - Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3:

Day 1: Attending the Core, first day, of Diabetes Diet Day (Day 1) will make a significant difference for the health of anyone attending and may easily meet all your needs. 

Day 2: For those who would to like to progress with further support in making changes and / or losing weight

 

Day 3: Will suit those who are on insulin and would benefit from a more intensive approach.

Outline and Aims of Diabetes Diet Day - Day 1:

To learn key diet and lifestyle strategies for improving blood glucose control to either improve diabetes or reduce risk of developing diabetes.

 

Session Outline:

  1. Establishing a balanced diet and balanced meals

  2. Steps towards achieving a healthy weight

  3. Understanding carbohydrates and the impact of carbohydrate Type and Portion size on blood glucose and weight

  4. Understanding impact of fats on health and weight

  5. Importance of physical activity in diabetes

  6. Setting a Weight loss aim

  7. Monitoring progress

  8. Setting goals and action plans

  9. Follow-up options

 

 

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the day you will have gained key knowledge in and set out a plan to:

- Establish a more balanced diet

- Make lower glycaemic index and lower sugar choices

- Develop carb portion size awareness

- Make lower fat choices and calories reductions for weight loss

- Increase physical activity

- Set a weight loss goal where needed

- Understand the potential relationship between diet and lifestyle changes, blood glucose changes and medication needs

- Devise your own personalised action plan to wards achieving your goals

The timetable for the day will be:

  • 9.45am: Registration

  • 10.00am-12.00pm: Education and practical activities

  • 12.00pm-1.00pm: Lunch break (see note below)

  • 1.00pm-3.00pm: Education continues

For lunch, you can choose to bring your lunch and eat at the venue or you can head off to enjoy the local restaurants. Your choice. If it's a nice day bring a blanket and we can go picnic in the park!

Please note the venue for this introductory event is quite basic, with plastic chairs. So it is suggested you bring a cushion to improve your comfort on the day. There will interactive activities to get you standing if you can so you will not be sitting and listening all day but rather you will getting involved in your own learning.
